★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is a lovely place and a teritory of Turkey. Some Armenian friends might want this area, but dreaming is free for everyone.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An incredible site that merits a comprehensive conservation effort to preserve this jewel of medieval civilization for generations to come. Much remains to be done but a visit will be unforgettable.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Totally worth to come to the otherwise dull city of Kars, so one can spend time in this old citadel of Ani. Recommended to spend half a day around, you can walk down to the river, see the fire temple and all. Top turkey destination

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful site, a must see if you are in Kars area. So many cultures have made this city their home over the centuries, and left their mark on the landscape. Although some restoration is in progress, the scale of what is need to uncover the treasures here is truly awe inspiring. The view from the top of the castle is hard to beat anywhere!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 1 of the churches in Ani ruins that is with checking out. It takes around 2 hours to do the whole complex. I went early and had it to myself.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Get there via car/taxi from Kars. You will need about 4 hours. There is very few facilities outside and none inside so bring water/snacks. Ani has some sign posts but I recommend you download a guide or there's also an ok one in Lonely planet. I loved it. The ruins are huge, and only about 5% is uncovered.there are churches and mosques to explore. Some frescoes have survived as well. The walls are particularly impressive.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The citadel itself is not particularly interesting in and of itself but the view from here is on of the very best in Ani. Make sure to walk to the far point of the citadel area where there is a small octagonal Chapel with a great view of the Maidens Castle monastery. Unfortunately the monastery is not open to visitors. It was a the last part of the city abandoned sometime in the 1700s when the last monks left the remote and desolate site.
