History and architecture The church, which is estimated to have been built in the 3rd century, belongs to the Orthodox Assyrians.[1] Although there are 14 inscriptions in the building complex, these are the inscriptions belonging to the repairs and additions of the buildings.[2] The oldest of these inscriptions is dated 1533 and it is written in this inscription that the building was renovated.[2] The building was renovated in 1648 and 1297 by fire, renovated in 1533, the apse part in 1689, the Mor Yakup part in 693, and additions were made in 1719, 1850, 1881 and 1914, as well as repairs and renovations.[2] The church took its present form with the restoration carried out between 2004-2005.[2] There is a gate dating to the late Roman period and decorations on the altar from the Byzantine[3] whose remains can be seen.[1] It consists of two courtyards. The main courtyard is the first courtyard entered through the outer door. To the east of the courtyard is the church building, to the north and south of the buildings used as lodging, and to the west is the entrance gate and a small garden.[1] There is also a small ornamental pool in the courtyard.[1] There is a door opening to the second courtyard from the southeast of the first courtyard.[1] The second courtyard is used as the church's garden and there is a garden in this courtyard. Except for the garden, there are no structural or vegetal elements in the courtyard.[1] The church is also covered with a single centered brick dome.[4]
