I’m an American full time traveler for several years. I greatly enjoy new experiences and cultural learning opportunities. This one is intriguing and has features I really like, amazing ancient building, superbly hot water, a price tag of about $2.25 US but… For those unfamiliar or who have only gone to hammams set up for tourists I want to help you prepare. I’ve been to this one twice now and will probably go again because we don’t have hot water (just tepid) at our Airbnb. A couple of things to know: It can feel very much like a hen house where you are getting a bit pecked. Anything I did differently like use my own products was a cause for very loud discussion at me and about me. Staring at me while I undressed, bathed myself and dressed was likewise very entertaining by staff and visitors. Running commentary and jibing about my clothing and undergarment choices was also considered fair game. Tongue clucking, head shaking and other signs of disapproval were intense when I made it clear that I did not want to be exfoliated. I had watched the lady the first time I went and saw how rough she was and how she had to be asked several times to avoid some recent tattoos the young European girl had gotten. I would have stood up and walked away but she endured it although she shared how unhappy she was about it afterwards. I love spa treatments and would have very much enjoyed a nice exfoliation but this environment felt aggressive and I was there to clean myself, relax and enjoy it. I think it will be easier next time because they know I won’t be bullied into submission and will likely not be squawking at me from the moment I go in the door, made extra intimidating because of the echo effect. Just a bit of kindness, empathy and respect would go a long way to making this a very very enjoyable experience rather than one that comes with a bit of dread. Note for those who like me can’t read Turkish and don’t take their device to a sauna, the turn to the building is on your right before you get to the bottom of the stairs. There’s a bit of blue spray paint on a stone at knee level on your right that says spa. Turn there. The metal sign in front is changeable and flips around showing a man or a woman depending who is allowed at the time. Even though the posted time says 12-6 for women, even when I arrived at 4 I was pressured several times about getting done. I was there less than an hour. Careful stepping down from the dressing room into the hall. It’s wet and very slippery. I did see lockers with keys but didn’t ask or use. Some women keep on their panties. Some go full nude. Bowls are provided for dousing yourself. The steam sauna has wooden benches. There are marble seats aside incredible solid marble bowl sink with beautiful handles where you sit and bathe with a hook above where you can hang your towel and bag. Temp can be adjusted in the bowl. The toilets looked pretty clean. Didn’t notice if there was paper. Both times I’ve paid as I left. I was charged 30tl If you do go be sure to read up a bit on the history. You’ll feel like a time traveler. Rambling Rhonda (you can find other in-depth sharing of my traveling experiences on IG, YT and Spotify)
