Caminin bulunduğu yere "Kayseriye" mahallesi deniliyordu. Kayıtlarda da öyle geçiyordu. Sonraları buraya Kumluk Mahallesi de dendi. O zaman cami de Kumluk ismini aldı. Bugün bu semt "Kurtuluş Mahallesi" olarak anılmaktadır. Cami diğer camiler gibi çeşitli dönemlerde yıkıma uğradı, bazı dönemlerde de çökme tehlikesi geçirdi. En önemli onarımı Sadrazam Kuyucu Murat Paşa zamanında gördü (1606-1607). Cami Osman Gazi tarafından yaptırıldı. Osman Gazi hutbesini burada okuttu. Bugün caminin girişinde "İlk hutbenin hicri 697 yılında" bu camide okutulduğu yazılıdır. Pek bir orjinalliği kalmasa da yine de tarihi bir cami.Görülmeli. Burada öğrendiğim ilginç bilgi ise şimdi aralarından kocaman bir yol geçse de cami ve Şehzade Süleyman türbesi bir zamanlar aynı külliyenin parçalarıymış.
