Operating in the apparel industry, Koton was founded in Istanbul in 1988 by the Yılmaz Yılmaz and Gülden Yılmaz couple. Yilmaz couple, whose main professions are officers and teachers, started to trade with a small shop in order to sell surplus products. The couple left their jobs and started dealing entirely with merchandising and textile after the shop gained great attention. Starting to make its own production in 1995, Koton opened its first overseas store in Munich, Germany in 1996. As of December 2015, Koton has 434 stores and 159 of its stores are located abroad in 28 countries, especially in Russia and Germany. The target of 2016 is to open a total of 91 stores, 61 of which are abroad, 30 of which are domestically, with 525 stores and 12,500 employees to maintain their position among the global players of the sector. In addition, Koton will open a 1,800-square-meter store on Boulevard Saint Germain, Paris's most magnificent shopping street in 2016, and will announce to everyone that it is a global brand in the fashion world.
