Kilise Mosque

Temple of St. George converted into a mosque after an exchange of peoples.

It is in Güzelyurt district center, 38 kilometers from Aksaray. The church was built by Emperor Theodosius in the name of Saint Gregorius Theologos, the Nenezili scribe, in 385 with a closed cross plan. Later, the bell tower of the church, which underwent various changes, was turned into a minaret and turned into a mosque. The iconastasis, made of wood and painted with madder, located in the apse of the Church Mosque, was moved from its place by turning the church into a mosque and arranged as a mihrab. In addition to this work, which is one of the best examples of wood carving, the Russian Tsar II. The wooden anbon sent by Nikola completes the iconastasis. To the north of the garden is the guesthouse of the place of worship. Next to the Church Mosque, there is an underground water, a holy spring, descending through thirty-five stairs.

The church used by Turks for worship in Güzelyurt, where Orthodox Turks lived before, was converted into a church after the first world war, when the Turks here went to Greece as a result of the population exchange.
