İlk Türk denizci ve Osmanlı’nın ilk Kaptan-ı Derya’sıdır. ? Kahramanlıkları nedeniyle, gözü pek anlamında "Kara" ünvanıyla anılmıştır. ? Kara Mürsel Bey, Orhan Gazi'nin isteği ile Osmanlı'ya katılmış ve 1326'da İzmit Körfezi'nin güney kıyılarını ele geçirmiştir. ? Fethettiği kasabaya geleneklere uygun olarak “Karamürsel” adı verilmiştir. ? 1327’de ilk Osmanlı tersanesini burada kurmuş ve kendi tasarımı olan ilk Osmanlı gemilerini yine burada yaptırmıştır. ? “Karamürsel” adı verilen hafif ve hızlı gemilerden oluşan Osmanlı’nın bu ilk donanmasıyla Marmara Denizi'ni denetimi altına almıştır. ? Vasiyeti üzerine kabri; kendi adını taşıyan ilçede, kurmuş olduğu tersanenin arka tarafında, denize bakan bir yamaçtadır.
