Bu dönemde Sütçü İmamın Uzunoluk Hamamından çıkan kadınlara sarkıntılık yapan Fransız askerlerine karşı attığı ilk kurşun; kalesinden bayrağının dalgalanmadığını gören imam Rıdvan Hoca’nın 28 Kasım 1919 günü Ulu Camide ‘’ Türk bayrağı dalgalanmadıkça burada namaz kılmanın doğru olmadığı hitabı ile’’ kıldırmadığı Cuma Namazının ve namazı bırakıp kaleye koşan kahraman halk, 21 Ocak 1920'de başlayan yerel direniş sonucu Fransızları çekilmek zorunda bırakmış ve 12 Şubat 1920'de İstiklalini kazanarak kendini kurtaran ilk şehir olmuştur.
