Juliopolis Nekropol

Necropolis of an ancient city of Çayırhana. You can reach the necropolis by deviating approximately 3 km from the Ankara-Nallıhan road. There is no entry fee. You park it in the land on the edge of the parking lot. You can wander through the necropolis and see the remains of the walls. I would recommend you to see the view as the sun is close to setting. There are pictures in the tomb number 392 on the entrance side and a figure in M30.

While passing through Çayırhan, I saw the sign and entered. A necropolis located right next to the Sarıyar dam lake. The city of Juliopolis remained under the dam lake. As the cemetery is located on the hill, it survived unharmed. It was excavated for the first time in 1991, and there was no official excavation until 2009. Looks like it's been looted a bit with illegal excavations. Insufficient information. There were the remains of two large buildings on the hill, of course, I did not understand what happened, they did not put any information. Some of the tombs have informative signs. History buffs will enjoy visiting this place. The original name of the city is Gordio Kome (Gordion Village). It was later renamed Juliopolis in honor of Emperor Augustus. In the 9th century, it was named Basileon in honor of the Byzantine king Basil. The city was an important religious center and produced many famous bishops. In addition, the city is a part of the Pilgrim Road stretching from Istanbul to Antakya. Located between Iznik and Ankara, the city was an important stopover for Christian pilgrims. It is written that there are 671 graves in the necropolis. 71 of them were destroyed by ancient tomb robbers. Thanks to this place I entered by chance, I gained a lot of new information.

If you are on your way to this ancient tomb area, located at the entrance of Çayırhan, right next to the lake, or if you have made a trip to Beypazarı, you can stop by. There are many ancient tombs in the region. Some of them can be entered and the pictures inside can be seen. Unfortunately, since there are no detailed information or things like a relic exhibition, it may not make much sense to turn your route here, especially if you are not very curious. No facilities etc. You can have a different experience by stopping your car on the way and walking around the mountains. I think it would deserve 5 stars if it was a little more well-maintained, if there was information about the region and the ruins were exhibited. It is a beautiful spot that adds value to this region and can be visited with both its scenery and history.

There is a sign at the Çayırhan entrance, follow them, do not follow the navigation. There is no maintenance and service, they did the excavations in the area and left. History buffs might like it. The stones found are the remains of buildings and tombs. But there is no information sheet. I don't know what is what. Remains of historical artifacts are standing around like that, there are some columns with inscriptions.

This necropolis Juliopolis was used as a burial ground during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. There are many carved rock and chamber tombs. Excavation work has not yet been completed. It can be visited for free.
