A it's ruined due to.the fact that there will be a water dam into the village and a lot of the historical places in hasankeyf will be destroyed by the water coming into the village very soon we were told we were one of the few last lucky ones to see the village which is being move a few kilometres up the road such a shame a total disaster

____general review for hasankeyf___ Not only will this amazing place be lost in the near future with the dam project but much of is closed at the moment. What you can see is spectacular but it's rather limited compared to what is all really there. As the upper citadel is now closed I'd recommend the scattered caves. We came across a church and all sorts of other stuff. Also make sure to check out Zeynel Bey Türbesi in its new location.

An ancient historical site with hundreds of cave houses, a castle built by Byzantines in the 4th century including two palaces, and a mosque built either by Ayyubids or Seljuks. This is a great historical site which dates back from thousands of years ago. Unfortunately the government is building a dam on this peerless history.

It was declared a natural conservation area by Turkey in 1981

Hasankeyf Castle is one of the touristic sites of the historic Hasankeyf township. This town hosted about 10 kingdoms and empires, thus hold great histories. It lies by the Tigris river and currently is under the threat of disappearing beneath the river due to fast increasing water levels. The city is being moved therefore to a new settlement.

Truly magnificent site. The view from the road is incredible and then it starts to materialize around you when you slowly descend to the castle, feeling decidedly tiny against those giant rocks and yet powerful, knowing how humans shaped them with the most primitive of tools
