Habib-i Nejjar Mosque

Habibi Neccar Mosque is known as the first constructed mosque of the city. Mosque, which was constructed instead of an ancient Roman temple during Baybars period, was reconstructed during Ottoman period in 17th century as it had been damaged by an earthquake in 9th century, but minaret had hold its former appearance. Under the structure reflecting the Ottoman architecture, there are three cemeteries that the public visit.

According to the Qur'an, Habib-i Neccar (neccar means carpenter) was the first person who believed in apostles of Jesus, and thus, was slaughtered by the people of Antioch. After the region became Muslim during the Abbasi reign around 6th century, they built this historical mosque in memory of Habib-i Neccar by replacing an old temple. The rumour has it that, Habib-i Neccar also believed that there will be a last prophet after Jesus, so, Muslims also consider him a sacred person who became Muslim 6 hundred years before the Prophet Mohammed.

Hz. In 33 AD, Jesus sent 2 apostles to the region of Antioch to spread Christianity. During the missionary work, the first Christian community in history and the Saint Pierre Church formed in Antiochia. However, the majority of Antioch people react violently to the apostles. On top of that, Carpenter Habib - i Neccar, who first believed in the apostles, made suggestions to the people of Antioch and helped the apostles. 3. An apostle is also sent to the city to support the apostles. However, all this is not enough to calm the people of Antioch, the apostles and Habib - i Neccar was killed by the people of Antioch. In the Qur'an, these events are explained in verses 13 and 19 of Surah Yasin. In this respect, the Habib - i Neccar Mosque was built in the 13th century during the period of Baybars, the Turkish Mameluke Sultan of Egypt and the region.

They planted orange tree in the terrace The place is built to memorize Habib An-Najjar, the carpenter that mentioned in surah Ya-seen, that keep his faith although have to be killed.
