HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT After the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, while a small settlement depends on the Townships, it has been the district on June 1, 1954. It has an important development potential in terms of tourism, historical richness and natural beauties. Erdemli is a district located 37 km west of Mersin and on the Mediterranean coast. The fact that historical and touristic places are intense within the boundaries of the district and the majority of citrus production is grown in this district reveal the important position of the district in the province. Although it is not known exactly where the name of Erdemli comes from, it is stated that it comes from the name of a Turkmen tribe called "Erdemoğulları" (a tribal lord named Erdem Bey), which is thought to have come from Central Anatolia in the 15th century. Virtuous; Hittites, Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Egyptians, Karamanids and Ottomans lived their period. While Erdemli, which was a village until 1953, was a small settlement in the Silifke District, it was established as a district by merging the Yağda Subdistrict of Silifke with the Elvanlı District of Mersin. GEOGRAPHICAL STATUS Erdemli is a charming town on the Mediterranean coast, rich in natural beauty. It is surrounded by Mezitli in the east, Silifke in the west, Karaman and Konya in the north, and the Mediterranean in the south. Its area is 2.078 km². 62% of this area is forest, 17% is agricultural land, 21% is pasture, stony and rocky.
