Turkish Baths Cultural Heritage Healing in Anatolia

A nice introduction to Turkey's hamam or public bath culture. Lots of interesting facts located inside a historic hamam. Well worth a visit and the TRY 2 per person entrance fee. The museum is a short walk from the Gaziantep castle.

Small museum with models, sculptures and and explanations about the history and use of the hammams. 2 big saloons of an old hammam and one small store is all you'll find in the museum.

Beautiful museum right beside the Gaziantep castle. You should visit and see the Hamam(Ottoman Bath) culture here before you experience going to Hamam yourself so you would not miss the tiny details during your Hamam :) Entrance fee was 5₺ only and sadly the soap making wasnt available bc of pandemic. Still you should visit if you pass by the castle :)

The public bath does not have an inscription showing when it was built. However, there are trust deeds and court records indicating that it was built by order of Lala Mustafa Pasha. Its trust deed is dated 1577 and it must have been built when Lala Mustafa Pasha was Governor-General of Aleppo and Damascus between 1563 and 1577. Public baths are considered the first-built element of a complex and the trust deed used to be issued after the work was completed. Therefore, the Pasha Public Bath must have been constructed in the years 1564/1565. The public bath with the inn, soap factory, now non-extant Bedesten and Mir-i Miran small mosque to the east of it constituted a complex (Lala Mustafa Pasha Complex). The building, which reflects the public bath architecture of the Ottoman period, was built embedded in the ground, quite below the ground elevation, like in almost all other Antep public baths. Accessed by going down in nine steps through the gate with a pointed arch, which opens out to the street, the public bath consists of a cold bath, a warm bath, a hot bath, a water reser- voir and a stokehole. The cold bath, the place of ini- tial entrance to the building, has a square plan and is covered with a dome in the middle of which there is a lantern light. The changing-room is connected by a corridor to the warm bath, which is a large space with iwans on the two sides of a centre that has a square plan. The hot bath, directly accessed from the warm bath, consists of eight iwans and two single rooms lined around the eight-cornered marble platform situated in the middle of the cen- tral space. The water reservoir and the stokehole are located in the extension of the hot bath.
