Erzurum İmam Hatip Lisesi, Maarif Vekaleti tarafından 01 Eylül 1953 tarihinde açılır. İlk olarak İstanbul kapı semtinde vakıflara ait şu an restore edilen tarihi binada tedrisata başlar.
Müteşebbis heyetin başında Müderris Sakıp Danışman Efendi, Erzurum eşrafından Hulusi Efendi ve Muhittin Efendi gibi zevat vardır. Daha sonra Erzurum Müftüsü olan Sakıp Efendi; Arapça, Farsça ve Felsefe dersleri verir.
Okulun kurucu Müdürü Erzurum (Ankara Gazi Terbiye Enstitüsü mezunu) 1327 doğumlu Tahsin AKGÜN (AŞIROĞLU ) dur. 1961 yılına kadar bu görevi sürdürür

The founding director of the school is Erzurum (graduate of Ankara Gazi Education Institute) Tahsin AKGÜN (AŞIROĞLU) who was born in 1327. He continued this duty until 1961
