In the 19th century, the French first started excavations in a large area in Didyma. However, they fail especially in the face of the gigantic dimensions of the Temple of Apollo, which was started in the time of Alexander the Great and was not completed until the end of the Antiquity. The Didyma excavations were undertaken by the Prussian Royal Museum in Berlin in 1905. After seven years of great effort between 1906 and 1913 under Theodor Wiegand, the Temple of Apollo is finally exposed. Wiegand directed these excavations until his death in 1937. Istanbul German Archaeological Institute restarted the work in Didyma in 1962. Studies quickly moved around the sanctuary of Apollo and are still concentrated in this area, with the aim of revealing the mythological figure of this oracle center with targeted excavations.
