Cambazlı Kilisesi

A rather large church on the top of the mountain. It has also been restored. If you come to Uzuncaburc, you can stop by.

Cambazli Church Silifke Cambazlı Village, which was understood to be an important settlement during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, was connected to Uzuncaburç (Diocaesarea), Ura (Olba) and Kızkalesi (Corycus) with an ancient road. Thanks to this connection, many works are encountered in the village, which has a lively structure every period. Cambazlı Church is within the borders of Silifke, the richest district in terms of ancient cities and historical settlements. The church, which gave its name to Cambazlı Village, 29 km northeast of Silifke, was built in the second half of the 5th century AD. As Cambazlı Village is located on the ancient paved road between Uzuncaburç and Kızkalesi, there are many historical monuments in the village. Among the works mainly belonging to Roman and Byzantine periods are churches, cistern, monumental tombs, sarcophagi, rock tombs and wells. The most striking one of the works that have survived in Cambazlı is the Cambazlı Church. The church with a basilica plan and three naves was built in a rectangular structure. The roof of the church, whose long sides are 20 meters and its short sides 13 meters, collapsed over time. The church, with its outer four walls standing, is regarded as one of the best cases, preserving its original features among its counterparts. From the two column series inside the church, whose north facade is completely closed, all the columns with Corinthian capital on the right and the gallery columns listed above can be seen. There is a cistern in the courtyard of the church. In addition to the monumental tombs, many rock tombs can be seen within the ruins of the ruins in the vicinity of the church. While coming to Cambazlı Church, you can go on the Roman road connecting Uzuncaburç, Olba Ancient City and Kızkalesi and visit other ancient cities. Silifke Cambazlı Church was in front of me as it was restored on my last visit. For some reason this time it seemed ordinary to me. However, I was very impressed by the old ruin It was as if the restoration had erased that ancient soul of the church, into a building consisting of mortar and plaster. It will be great if it is nice to be restored but if it is done more carefully and our people know its value.

This is history here. There is a remnant on every hill adorned with history on the Taurus Mountains, but we could not promote it.

We turned our route in Mersin-Antalya direction to the right at the entrance of Kızkalesi: We continued on our way to the ancient cities. While entering Cambazlı village at the end of the 20 km road, Cambazlı Church greeted us. There are ruins from the Late Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.

Located approximately twenty kilometers from the Maiden's Castle, the church is the best preserved church of its period that I have ever seen. There are no mausoleums and a cistern inside the church, which was built in the fifth century BC.
