An educational place for children. The entrance fee was 7TL per adult. There were some mastadon fossil remains of the mammoths, an impressive defense teeth of a filigree, some stuffed birds and a skeleton model of the Mammuthus meridionalis. Otherwise quite lacking and boring as far as natural history museums go. The Orthodox Greek church converted to this museum was interesting in itself. Drop by only if you happen to be in the area.

30,000,000-year-old furry elephant ???? This Mastodon was uncovered close to this beautiful little town about a hundred years ago. Today she sits in an absolutely beautiful building that used to be many things... A Greek Orthodox Church. A storage facility. A movie theater. And today a fantastic natural history museum ? Mastodon's roamed this planet of ours for about 30 million years... Crazy enough they only went extinct about 12,000 years ago... Which in the great scheme of things is really not that long! There are several ruins located right here in Turkey that were built when mastodons still roamed our earth........ Let that sink in for a few minutes ??? Mastodons were prehistoric relatives of today's elephants. Like their modern cousins, mastodons had tusks, flappy ears and a long nose. Both animals, as well as the woolly mammoth, are members of the order Proboscidea, a name that comes from the Greek word proboskis. (Which means nose) ?? Mastodons and woolly mammoths both look like ancient elephants, but they are separate species. One big difference between them is when they appeared on Earth. Mammoths appeared only about 5.1 million years ago in Africa. Mastodons on the other hand appeared about 27 million to 30 million years ago ⏳?️ There are several other differences. Mastodons were slightly smaller than mammoths. Though they are both herbivores but they ate differently. Mastodons had blunt cone-shaped molars that would crush vegetation, while mammoths had ridged molars that cut plants, much like today's elephants. Back to the building that houses this fantastic lil museum it's absolutely exquisite! I enjoyed the ancient skeleton and seeing these fossilized tusks buuuuuut seeing the arches and frescoes inside of this building really brought the whole thing home for me ? I had been wanting to visit this place for a few months and I can say it was worth the wait. Big thumbs up ???
