Zaten Bitlis şehri denince akla ilk gelen türkü İzzet Altınmeşe'nin meşhur ettiği "Bitlis'te beş minare"türküsüdür. Bu camii de o beş minareden biri olmalı. Bitlis'ten Hasankeyf'e doğru gittiğimiz yol sarp ve ıssız olması sebebiyle nedense ürkütücü ve güvensiz gözükmüştü gözüme. I remember that after our departure from Tatvan in our tour 17 years ago, when the tire of our bus exploded, I had to spend about three hours in Bitlis and during that time I visited the Great Mosque. The first song that comes to mind when talking about the city of Bitlis is the "five minarets in Bitlis" which was famous by İzzet Altınmeşe. This mosque must be one of those five minarets. The way we went from Bitlis to Hasankeyf seemed frightening and insecure for some reason because it was steep and deserted.

According to its inscription, it was built in 1153 by Ebul Muzaffer Muhammed, a member of the Seljuk sultan Tugrul Bey.[1][2] The building, which was badly damaged during the Russian occupation, underwent major repairs in 1985. Its current state is very beautiful.
