Sere kani, Van, Edremit, Gevaş ve bağlı çok sayıda köyün içme suyu kaynağıdır; doğal akışına devam eden suyu üzerinde ise çok sayıda alabalık çiftliği işletilmektedir. Bu kaynak, yaklaşık 3000 yıl yaşında olan Şamran kanalını besleyen kaynaktı. Günümüzdeki Şamran kanalının suyu Hoşap çayından geliyor, Sere kani'den değil.
