SUMMER OF THE COMMAGENE KING Arsemia Ancient City is another archaeological site on the Nemrut route. It was the capital of the Commagene civilization for a period. Arsemia, also known as a castle, was used not only for defense but also for digging tunnels for religious purposes. On the way to Arsemia, a statue and a water cistern are encountered on the narrow pathway. As you continue upwards, there is a tomb belonging to Mithridates I, the father of King Antiochus I, who brought the Commagene Kingdom to the top. On the other hand, Antiochus I put the biggest Greek inscription of Anatolia, which sheds light on the history of Arsemia, on this tomb. In this inscription, there are historical information about the monumental tomb and the civilization of the period. It is among the information found that Arsemia was founded by the ancestor of Antiochus I, Arsames, that this region was the summer capital of the kingdom and that it was the tomb of Mithridates I.
