★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the great moments of my life, which I can not remember without pride and bitterness at heart. Ani is a great monument to the great Armenian kings, knights and masters. Unfortunately this great historical heritage now belongs to Turkey, which removes all Armenian traces from this ancient Armenian capital.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely stunning site. One of my favorite in Turkey. Recently a great deal of scaffolding has gone up to preserve some of the near-collapse sites which rather dampens the authenticity though it is certainly necessary.
While the cast majority of the monuments left standing are the work of the local Christian Armenian and Georgian peoples, there are a couple of buildings left from the period of Islamic rule (seljuk turks as well as a Kurdish kingdom). Its interesting to see how much of the overtly Christian symbols were left despite Islamic rule considering the practice of removing crosses and icons in many other historic sights.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What was once one of the greatest cities in the world, so called The City of 1001 Churches, is today but ruins. I drove there, so I don't know about the public transportation, and the entrance fee was 10 Turkish lira, if I remember correctly. The area is huge, and the ruins are spread over many square kilometers. Around it there are some caves and rivers that dug steep canyons into the rocks. You can camp around it, as it quite secluded and only a few house of shepherds are around the area. The are some ruins of churches, walls and mosques still standing, all the rest are just stones and bricks scattered everywhere.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ So much big open air museum, so much things to visit, sadly that we came with tour guide, so we hadn't enough time to do hiking in the deep parts of it, but for 1:30 hours it was enough to see the important parts, those crazy building architecture design, are wow, while walking your mind just imagine how was those old people living there, you are walking when old old people was walking before with their old objects staff, old market, old life style like we watch in historical movies... I recommended ❤️

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a pity it is not treated with the same respect as one of the buildings which has been restored.
An impressive building but sadly littered inside on my visit

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Of all the many historic sites across Turkey, this is my favourite, it just has something about it... Maybe its former importance on Silk Road, maybe its link with modern Armenia, maybe the realisation that you're walking amidst 700 year old ruins of a once great, great city.
